Welcome To Turlington!
The first day at a new school can be scary for some people. At Turlington, we do not want that to happen. Student Council (which I am in) sets up a "New Student Social" where we give the new students cookies and juice while we talk to them and make them feel at home. We do that regularly for all the new students who have joined here over the past few months. We also welcome the new student with a tour of our school. We show them our library, music, the gym, the cafeteria and their classroom. Along the way we learn their name, where they came from and things that they are interested in. Many parents join in on the tour as well, this is our first chance to make these new kids feel right at home.
Many students at the social say they already have friends and they like the social, the school, and everyone in the school. Very few are shy, and the ones who are not, talk about how they are doing in school and what they like about it. Student Council is very proud to have such an impact on all of the new students here at Turlington.
Teacher of the Year - Rosalia Barquero
I am honored to be Turlington's Teacher of the Year. It is a pleasure being surrounded by a wonderful staff that takes our children's education to heart. I have been a bilingual elementary teacher for 13 years, 3 years in 2nd grade and 10 years in 3rd grade. This achievement wouldn't be possible without my family's support. My dad was my inspiration in this career. My mom was always a brave model to me. My high school sweetheart, my husband Gustavo, has been my biggest supporter all the way. My children Dylan and Mitzi have been my motivation all these years to be a nurturing teacher, and to become better every day by understanding my students' feelings and needs. God has given me the honor to be a teacher and I will honor that opportunity with my heart.
Rookie of the Year - Crystal Mielke
I'm very honored to be chosen as the 2016-2017 Rookie of the Year by my peers. It has been an amazing two years at Turlington. The faculty has become my second family and I'm beyond blessed.
I graduated from Eastern New Mexico University and went through Texas Teachers for my EC-6 Generalist certification. I'm thrilled to be teaching 3rd grade math and science. I strive to make learning fun and engaging. My goal is for each and every student to reach their highest potential.
I'm a proud mom of three Waller graduates. I've been married to my high school sweetheart for 25 years. I'm especially Aggie proud of my oldest daughter who will be graduating Texas A&M in May. Whoop! God has truly blessed me.
Support Staff of the Year - Angela Valenzuela
Turlington is such a wonderful place to work. The faculty and staff are fun and friendly. They truly care about their students. Most of all, I love my job as in class support. The students motivate me to do the best job I can. When I see happiness in their eyes after we have accomplished a task, it reassures me that Turlington is where I need to be! I feel honored to have been chosen as Support Staff of the Year.
